About
JoAn holds a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy with an emphasis in Clinical Professional Counseling from Touro University Worldwide and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Penn State University. She began her clinical training in 2024 and has since gained experience providing therapy across multiple practice settings. She provided therapy to MFTS clients during her Internship in Graduate School and now practices as a Clinician at MFTS.
JoAn works with children, teens, young adults, adults, and couples who feel stuck in patterns that impact their confidence, identity, and relationships. She frequently supports young clients who are struggling with self-esteem, navigating life transitions, or trying to figure out who they are, as well as couples who find themselves caught in cycles of miscommunication, emotional distance, or recurring conflict.
As a first generation Korean American, JoAn brings a culturally responsive and attuned lens to her work, helping clients explore how cultural or societal expectations, family dynamics, and lived experiences shape their identity, emotional world, and relationships. She believes that each person’s story is unique, and her approach honors individuality while helping clients move toward growth in ways that feel authentic and empowering.
Known for her warm, compassionate, and collaborative presence, JoAn creates a safe, affirming, and nonjudgmental space where clients can be both honest and human. With children and teens, she incorporates developmentally appropriate approaches, including play based and expressive techniques, while partnering with parents to support growth outside of sessions. With individuals and couples, she helps clients explore attachment patterns, improve communication, and better understand how past experiences show up in present day relationships.
JoAn believes therapy should be both validating and actionable. In addition to building insight, she focuses on helping clients develop practical, real life tools they can use in everyday moments, whether that’s managing anxiety, depression, setting boundaries, improving self-worth, or navigating difficult conversations. Her clinical approach is integrative and evidence-based, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Play Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Attachment Theory, the Gottman Method, and Imago Relationship Therapy.
She is a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor in MD (DC soon) under the supervision of Katie Dawson LPC.
